The Mongol Derby: About

THE HISTORY

Whilst out in Mongolia, Adventurists founder and keen rider Tom Morgan fell in love. He was not only blown away by Mongolia itself, with its magnificent history, deep-rooted culture and traditions and the endless and unforgiving steppe, but with something else...the humble yet audaciously noble Mongolian horses. They were the intercontinental ballistic missiles of the thirteenth century. They carried the all-conquering Mongol warriors across half the world. Diminutive, sturdy, fearless, wild and unbelievably tough they have changed very little over the centuries.

Later on that day he was busying himself with a Genghis Khan dot-to-dot when it hit him in the face like a sack of innards. We must organise a horse race. But not any horse race, the most challenging and unusual horse race known to humankind.

It was the nerve system of the largest empire in human history. Genghis Khan’s mighty horse messenger system connected half the planet. Tom decided The Adventurists would recreate this system to bring glory, chafing and honour to riders from around the world brave enough to tackle the ultimate equestrian adventure.

For more than a decade now, The Adventurists been rebuilding this ancient network to stage the world’s greatest horse race. Riders square up to 1000km of Mongolian steppe on semi-wild horses, changing steed every 40km. They have to navigate and survive using only their own wits and skill, whilst living among the herders. It’s you and your horse vs the wild.

This is the longest and toughest horse race on earth. This is the Mongol Derby

ABOUT THE ADVENTURISTS

We have one mission. To make life less boring.

Our planet used to slap us about the face-cheeks with iron fists of adventure every day. Maps had edges to walk off. Men feared the monsters that swam the seas. Entire civilisations lay unknown.

But now, the surface of the Earth has been scanned by satellites and shovelled into your mobile phone, tagged with twattery about which restaurant serves the best mocha-latte-frappeshite.

Getting lost and in trouble is no longer an occupational hazard of walking to the market. It is an art-form. One we strive to perfect.

We live to find ways to make the world a bit more difficult. To bring chaos into our over-sanitised lives. To create adventures where you don't know what will happen tomorrow or if you'll even make it.
